This page shows a demonstration of new features that are coming soon

TopTen USA is a website dedicated to helping Americans save both money and energy by finding the most efficient consumer products available.

TopTen USA analyzes all ENERGY STAR qualified desktop computers to find the top ten energy-savers among the hundreds of available models, and then combines it with data from consumers and online reviews to find the best money-saving products that are also popular with their purchasers. The Desktops shown on this page are ranked according to their popularity with their users and their predicted annual energy use within the categories set by ENERGY STAR.

We narrow down the ranking to find the right desktop for you. The TrueCost of the model, which includes the energy you will use, is shown for 5 years.

The result is a list of Desktop computers that will save energy, save you money, and that you will love using.

How We Select Products for the TopTen USA Desktops Listing

Product Definition/Scope

We used a modified ENERGY STAR® definition of computers: A computer is defined as a device which performs logical operations and processes data. Computers are composed of, at a minimum: (1) a central processing unit (CPU) to perform operations; and (2) user input devices such as a keyboard, mouse, digitizer or game controller. Within this definition, however, we evaluated only non-expandable desktop and laptop computers. The scope of TopTen's computer category does not include expandable desktops, workstations, thin clients or small scale servers.

TopTen divides computers into two TopTen lists:
1. Non-expandable desktop computers
2. Laptop computers

Performance Criteria and Parameters Used

  • ENERGY STAR Computer Program Requirements. All models meet Energy Star qualifications for testing and efficiency.
  • Annual energy use (kWh/year). We based annual energy use on ENERGY STAR's definition, calculation and data for Typical Energy Consumption (TEC).

ENERGY STAR classification. In addition to the primary ranking criteria, TEC, we also evaluated potential TopTen products based on ENERGY STAR's performance categories. Products were not ranked by these categories. Instead, we put a limit on products allowed from each ENERGY STAR performance category as well as each form factor type (i.e. small desktop, all-in-one desktop). By doing so, the TopTen list includes a comprehensive list of products from a variety of consumer categories and does not give one particular group any specific advantages.

For non-expandable desktops, the TopTen list is divided into five small desktops and five all-in-one desktops. Within these two divisions, there are two category A desktops, two category B desktops and one desktop that can come from the C or D category.

Data Source - We used manufacturer reported data from the EPA ENERGY STAR website along with cross referenced data from manufacturer, retail, and other government sources.

Market Availability - In order to be qualified the model must be currently available to consumers through retail outlets such as department stores, big box stores, independent appliance retailers and/or on-line retailers.

Product Ranking

We ranked products on the basis of annual energy use (kWh/yr). Models with identical annual energy use were subsequently ranked by Sleep mode power (W). Finally, if models had identical Sleep mode power, they would be ranked alphabetically by brand name and model number.
